About RentProof
RentProof (rentalsproof.com) is built by a small independent team for renters who are about to pay for a place. The moment that matters is not the search for a home; it is the message that asks for an application fee, a deposit or the first month's rent, often before you have seen the unit or a lease.
That moment is where money is lost. The FTC reports nearly 65,000 rental scam reports and about $65 million lost from January 2020 to June 2025, with a median reported loss of $1,000, and found that people aged 18 to 29 were three times as likely as older adults to report a loss (FTC Data Spotlight, December 2025).
What we make
Free renter guides on checking a listing, the fees and deposits you may be asked for, state rules with their sources, and how to find the owner of record. And a one-time $19.99 listing review that reads the listing and messages you received and shows the stated rent, fees, payment wording, conflicts and what is missing. How the review works.
How we work
- We say what the report reads, and never claim to verify a landlord, a price or an address.
- Every legal rule we mention links to the statute or official source it comes from.
- Guides show the date they were last updated, and say plainly that they are not legal advice.
- We are not affiliated with any listing site, landlord or property manager, and we do not sell rankings.
